When searching on the Internet about information about running shoes, you find many sites which will sell you their shoes, but very few sites which provide non-biased information about running shoes. While there are many websites about running, there are very few sites solely about running shoes. Hence the need for this mini website. All runners know the importance of having the proper shoe to meet his/her specific needs. There are many different brands and a very wide price range of running shoes available. So how do you know if you are selecting the right running shoe in order to meet your need.
The first question you need to ask yourself is this. What type of running do you plan to engage in? Most recreational runners will not engage in sprint type running, but prefer to simply run at the typical 6-8 mph of a typical runner, on pavement or on the local track. Therefore, what we will be discussing here is geared to this type runner. Lets first examine the type of running shoes that are available.
Normal, Non-Specialty Running Shoes
These shoes are for the average runner who is not engaged in long term marathon training, will not be engaged in trail running, and does not have a problem with overpronation. Anti-Foot Movement Running Shoes
These are specialty shoes designed to prevent overpronation. Overpronation is a condition that occurs when improperly supported arches flatten, causing the feet to become unstable and roll inward. While some pronation is normal, overpronation is not and it can lead to foot pain. If your foot is moving to much inside your shoe because of this, then you need a shoe which is designed to prevent this. This type shoe can be found for less then $100.00. Off Road Running Shoes
These shoes are designed primarily for trail running. Obviously these running shoes are built to take the extra stress of non-pavement running. These type of shoes are ideal for cross country runners. Cross country running was dropped from the Olympic Games in 1924, but it still remains popular at the high school and college level. Many recreational runners enjoy trail running, which provides a diversion from pavement and track running. These type of shoes, which are more rugged, yet light weight and comfortable, can be bought for under $90.00. Long Distance Running Shoes
These shoes are designed for runners who consistently run at distances longer then 5 miles per day. These shoes are designed for the runner who trains for marathons. These shoes provide similar support and cushioning as other running shoes, but they simply last longer. More miles can be placed on these shoes, before they wear out and you need new ones. Because these shoes last longer, they tend to be more expensive. The highest price shoe listed below is $125.00. Highly durable shoes suggested by Jonathan Cluett, M.D., are as follows:
So there you have it. A listing of the best shoes for running, suggested by an orthopedic surgeon. As you might expect, the longer lasting running shoes cost the most. But all of the above listed shoes are high quality running shoes and they should provide ultimate comfort and concomitantly prevent foot problems.
Technical development of running shoes has progressed steadily. This technical development is in the area of cushioning and support. One of the originators of the extra cushioned and support of the running shoe came from the Nike corporation. Nike, while working with NASA at the end of the 20th century, was the first to develop the air cushioning system for a running shoe.
Each company has developed it’s own technology for extra cushioning and support which is required of runners. Asics is probably most noted for the gel system of cushioning they provide in their running shoes. As an avid runner that has been running for over eight years, Asics have worked out very well for me. I run about 5 miles a day, 5 days a week. But that is not to say that Asics are right for every body.
The competition among companies to produce the best support and cushioning system for the running shoe is intense, to say the least. The benefactor of this competition is of course the runner. There is a dizzying array of choices of running shoes, for the runner today.
Running results in a higher energy level, better sleep, and over all good health. To not be able to run means a sluggish and lethargic feeling. A foot injury can literally stop your running. This is why it is imperative to buy new shoes when your favorite running shoes wear out, and it is imperative to select the right running shoe to replace those old worn out shoes. So when selecting shoes, select a shoe in the proper category, using the categories we have provided above. Try on many shoes, and when you put on the right pair of running shoes, you will know it immediately after taking the first few steps.
On a personal note, when your running shoes wear out, do not keep running in them. I know it is hard to depart from running shoes that you have gotten very used to from literally hundreds of miles of running. But if you do not replace them, you will develop an injury. The bottom of my right shoe, at the heal area, was worn out and I kept running on it, until I developed Achilles tendonitis, a very slow healing injury. Therefore, when your running shoes wear out, replace them. I have learned that lesson the hard way.
